Every time a Christian is made to feel condemned, or unworthy, or encouraged to put more effort into their personal walk with Christ toward the “appearance” of a righteousness; their reward that Jesus paid for with His own life is being stolen from them by the Devil. This is true even if the condemnation, unworthiness, or encouragement to work harder or do more comes from the pulpit.
Colossians 2:18-19 “18 Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, 19 and not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body, nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God.”
We have a reward in heaven as well as here on earth for being a child of God walking by faith and not by sight. There are many people today who are no different than the Pharisees of old who lift themselves up with their preaching of humility in works, or recognition of angels or angelic teachings and imposing the same on those who chose to follow such folly. There is no spiritual fruit to self- imposed humiliation or worship of angels. In fact it will pull you from an understanding of ods grace. Just as there is no fruit in abstinence of food or drink, or recognition of festivals, new moons, or Sabbaths as Paul spoke of in verse 16. The true biblical fact regarding worship of angels is found in Revelations 19:10, 22:8-9 which forbids worship of anything but God. Don’t confuse true humility which is godly, with false humility which is actually a prideful showing of a humble appearance.
It would be impossible for the bible to mention everything the Devil can deceive us with, but as long as we look into the perfect will of God and His word and maintain our understanding to line up with His word; staying out of gray areas we will be easy. Paul has recognized that some, and I believe many today, are going into spiritual places that they have not seen and should not go. What Paul is referencing to is preached doctrine that does not line up with the gospel of Jesus Christ and Him crucified. Without the Bible and specifically the New Testament as our guidepost it is easy for Satan to twist enough of God’s word to create another pseudo religion. Without the joy Spirit active in a believers life, revealing God’s true written word to us, we leave ourselves open for man’s interpretation and Satan will always get in the way.
In verse 19 Paul is driving home the importance of recognizing Jesus completely for who He is; God manifest in the flesh. Without recognizing Jesus for His deity, the price He paid for our sin would not have been enough which would leave our salvation open for additional works. But since Jesus is our Lord and savior He is the Head of the body of Christ; the church. Looking to Jesus instead of doctrines of man actually knits us together where we can truly grow with increase which is from God.
