Jesus is at the right hand of God making intercession for us at heavens court. Understanding the power of this is to understand the power of grace in our daily lives.
Hebrews 8:1-2, 1 Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, 2 a Minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord erected, and not man.”
Chapter 8:1 is actually the continuation from the end of chapter 7 and in context should not have been separated by a chapter. Many people studying the bible will stop their study at the end of seven and when returning to chapter eight may lose the context of thought. We have Jesus to hold onto and in fact the word tells us that it is God who will complete that which He started which means that He is holding stronger to us than we can ever hold on to Him, Philippians 1:6. The other concept often missed is the importance of Jesus being seated at the right hand of the throne of God in the heavens.
In today’s society where there are very few true kings in power around the world, we miss the importance of being seated at the throne and especially at the right hand of the king. For starters for a person to be allowed to sit in the presence of the king meant that person was in a powerful position because he had great favor from the king. The queen, when allowed to be in the public presence of the king, could only sit at his left hand which is to be recognized, but also considered to be in a weaker position. Everyone else had to be invited into the presence of the king and upon entrance they had to bow and wait for acceptance then they could only kneel or at best stand at the foot of the throne looking up at the king. Joseph was given the position of being at the right hand of Pharaoh when he was appointed over all the Pharaoh had except his own wife and household. Every time Joseph walked through the streets and everything he spoke was received as if the Pharaoh himself were present and speaking. Today we can look at Joseph as the type and shadow of the importance of Jesus sitting at the right hand of God. Although we do not see God we see Jesus and His word carries the full authority of God.
The second point of importance is the “true tabernacle” in verse 2. Remember Hebrews is comparing what the children of Israel had with the Law of Moses in the wilderness to what we have with Jesus today. The tabernacle is where God would come to meet with the children of Israel which was portable and had to be taken down and put back up each time they moved in the wilderness. Remember Jesus told the woman at the well that the time had come when we shall worship God in spirit and truth. Our connection with God is now established in the heavens and we no longer need to build something here on earth for Him to come to us. Our tabernacle will never go away, but no one knows where the tabernacle or the Ark of the Covenant is today.
