The Power of Grace Ministries

November 12

God is the one who has set Jesus at His right hand to make intercession for us. This means it was His choice to sacrifice His Son for our sins. God is not mad at you or else He would not have provided such a precious sacrifice for you.

Hebrews 7:20-22
, “20 And inasmuch as He was not made priest without an oath 21 (for they have become priests without an oath, but He with an oath by Him who said to Him: "The Lord has sworn And will not relent, 'You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek' "), 22 by so much more Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant.”

Many people miss the double negative in verse twenty and the importance of its comparison of the Levitical High Priest in verse twenty one. What is truly being stated is that Jesus was made our High Priest by an oath from God, whereas a High Priest under the Law was simply born into the tribe of Levi and if a man met all of the other physical requirements of perfection he was appointed High Priest until he died.  Also his death could happen once every year when he entered the Holy of Holies because of any imperfection. The quote within verse 21 is taken from a prophesy of King David written in Psalm 110:4 where God is proclaiming the superiority of Jesus reign when He assumes His position as our Lord and Savior.

According to the Law of Moses the appointed High Priest could only enter into the Holy of Holies once a year to make a blood sacrifice for the people of Israel and that atonement from sin was just good for a year. Many people consider the message of grace as their free “get out of jail card”. In comparison to the atonement made once a year by the Levitical High Priest the Law only provided a “deferred adjudication”, but the convection remained over the head of man. Do you want to go through life where every year you have to go back to court and ask for another year of staying out of jail knowing that one mistake would put you away forever? I know your answer is no, but in essence this is what a person is saying when they are determined to live by the law or man’s doctrines as effort to show righteousness. The hard truth is found in Galatians 5:4, “You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.”

Jesus is our surety of a better covenant in that He completely removed the criteria against us with His own life and instead of only entering the Holy of Holies once a year with fear of failure as the Levitical High Priests did, Jesus is actually seated at the right hand of God making consistent intersession for us, Ephesians 1:20, Hebrews 7:25, and Hebrews 8:1.
