God is the one who has qualified us to be His children and as His children we are partakers of the inheritance. If God is the one who qualifies, why do we put so much emphasis on our personal actions as a means for righteousness? You are righteous by His blood only.
Colossians 1:12 “12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.”
We should give thanks for “what” God has done. In verse 12 we see the word “has” which means something spoken of today is actually from the past. John 1:12 tells us that as many as received Jesus, to them He gave the right to become Children of God. Giving thanks to God should be the very first thing we do when we approach Him, because His word is so clear. He has made it possible to become His Children and as a Father His desire for us is blessings. One of the greatest fears the Devil uses on people to prevent them from coming to Jesus is fear of losing any of their freedoms, or having to give up friends or family. Verse 12 tells us we have an inheritance with the saints. An inheritance is “an allotted portion”, a pre-determined amount to receive or to inherit. Look at Matthew 19:29 to see what your inheritance is according to God. “And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My name's sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life.”
For starters this verse is not a command from Jesus that we “must” leave our house or family to follow Him. Remember that in Jesus’ day according to the Jewish religion, anyone not a Jew was considered a “Dog” and to agree with any other religion over the Law of Moses and the Pharisee’s would cause that believer to be removed from their home and their friends and their family would consider them as dead. This would be a huge loss in a new believers life and yet read what Jesus says He will make happen for you, “shall receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life” that’s awesome. Today and especially in the US culture there is a freedom to worship as you choose and most people do not have to risk losing their families, although the most important thing to remember is that to follow Jesus and believe in Him is to put God first in your life. Do not let another person stand between you and God. Last thought – remember that it is God who has qualified us through the blood of His son Jesus. That means if you believe you can add anything through your efforts to aid in becoming a child of God, or to maintain your status as child of God, what you are actually saying is that God’s will and the blood of Jesus is not good enough for you. To add your blood (efforts) to His shed blood for your redemption is actually to taint His perfect blood which was shed for your life.
