Today's Daily Devotional come directly from thirty plus years of Dr. David Jones' personal study notes.
Under the New Covenant we have the ability to speak directly to God, whereas under the Old Covenant people had to seek a prophet.
Hebrews 1:1-2 “1 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;”
POLUMEROS, the Greek words “various times” come from means, “variously as to time and agency”. What the writer is pointing out is that under the Old Testament Covenant God could only speak to His people on occasion and to only specific people; His Prophets. Remember that God cannot look upon or have any association with sin. Since the fall of Adam God could only speak to a chosen few who had enough faith to seek Him and even then the Holy Spirit would only come upon them never fill them for continued guidance as we have access to today.
The New Covenant through the blood of Jesus is far superior in every way. The greatest difference is that those who have received Jesus as their Lord and Savior can have permanent access to the in filling of the Holy Spirit. Anyone can boldly go into the presence of God for fellowship, help, and guidance Hebrews 4:16. Jesus is Heir to all that God has and has shared it with us, Romans 8:17; “and if children, then heirs--heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.” Everything in the world was made through Him and by Him Colossians 1:16- 17 and John 1:3. With this understanding it is easily recognizable to see why the Prophets of old looked into our time with longing.
Peter gave us the first overall picture of the vast improvement of connection with God when he stood up in Jerusalem preaching the gospel after He and the rest of the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit in the Upper Room. What Peter spoke as recorded in Acts2:17-18 was originally prophesied by the prophet Joel 2:28-29, “28 "And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions. 29 And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.”
We are under a better covenant which on one hand seems too easy since there is nothing we have to do other than believe and confess. The Old Covenant gave the believers something to do which for man is naturally easier to follow. The difficulty today is to learn how to walk by faith and not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7).
“Through whom also He made the worlds”, is referencing John 1:1-3 & 14 stating the same truth that all things were made through Jesus.
o told the disciples that He would send the Helper, the Holy Spirit when I went up to the Father. We must not think that the Holy Spirit was for the disciples only. Paul encourages us in most of the books he wrote that the Holy Spirit is a “must have” for all believers in Jesus.
God is not mocked and when he sets something in order it will happen. It is He who made the way for all mankind to have salvation through the bloodshed by Jesus on the cross. It is Jesus making intercession for us in heaven, and it is the Holy Spirit who gives the power to those who believe to both confess and receive salvation. This is where God in three Persons comes into play. All three work as one. God the Father, Jesus Christ the son, and the Holy Spirit all point to a pure and renewed relationship with God as our Father. Galatians 4:4- 7 “But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!" Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ”
